Born in Springfield, Missouri, he graduated from the University of Missouri - Rolla with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (cum laude).
He started his computer programming career in Dallas
working for Texas Instruments. There, he learned a valuable
lesson:
If you don't have time to do things right the first time,
when will you have time to do it right?
While in Dallas, Tom formed Salon Transcripts with his
brother and sister in law developing vertical market software,
initially on the Apple II, then the IBM PC, and finally Macintosh.
It was during this time, he learned another valuable lesson:
To write good business software, you have to be capable of
doing the job of the intended user.
After a short time in Dallas, he moved to Tulsa to dive head
long into private consulting. There, he worked with diverse
businesses. But being essentially a one-man show, he learned
yet another lesson:
